Legal Protections
Massachusetts leads the nation in LGBTQ+ legal protections:
- First state to legalize same-sex marriage (May 17, 2004)
- State law bans discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in employment, housing, public accommodations, credit, and union practices
- First state to uphold transgender protections through popular vote (November 2018)
- Conversion therapy banned for minors since 2019
- Massachusetts is ranked in the HRC's highest category: "Working Toward Innovative Equality"
HRC Score
Boston scores a perfect 100 on the HRC Municipal Equality Index, alongside Cambridge, Provincetown, Salem, and Worcester. In August 2023, Boston also removed all gender and sex designations from marriage license forms.
