Chicago is widely considered one of the most gay-friendly cities in the United States, consistently ranking alongside San Francisco and New York City. It is regarded as one of the safest cities in the country for LGBTQ+ travelers.

Legal Protections

Illinois has some of the strongest LGBTQ+ protections in the nation. The state bans discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in employment, housing, credit, and public accommodations. Conversion therapy on minors has been outlawed since 2016. Same-sex marriage was legalized in Illinois on November 20, 2013 — before the Supreme Court's nationwide ruling.
