Is New Orleans Gay Friendly?

New Orleans is widely considered one of the most LGBTQ+-friendly cities in the United States, with a culture of openness and celebration that has deep historical roots.

Legal Protections

  • City ordinance (1991): New Orleans prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation in employment, housing, and public accommodations
  • Gender identity protections (1998): New Orleans was one of the earliest cities in the country to add gender identity to its non-discrimination ordinance
  • State hate crime law (1997): Louisiana became the first state in the Deep South to pass hate crime laws covering sexual orientation
  • HRC Municipal Equality Index: New Orleans consistently scores in the 80-90+ range out of 100, one of the highest in the South

Cultural Climate

New Orleans has been a haven for LGBTQ+ people for generations. The city's "laissez les bons temps rouler" (let the good times roll) culture extends to a genuine acceptance of all people. The French Quarter and Marigny gayborhood has been a recognized LGBTQ+ hub since at least the 1950s, and Southern Decadence — now in its 54th year — draws over 250,000 visitors annually.

Important Context

While New Orleans itself is deeply welcoming, Louisiana as a state lacks comprehensive statewide anti-discrimination protections for LGBTQ+ people. The state has also passed restrictive legislation regarding transgender rights in recent years. However, within New Orleans city limits, visitors and residents benefit from strong local protections and a community that actively celebrates its LGBTQ+ population.

Safety

The French Quarter and Marigny are generally safe and welcoming areas for LGBTQ+ visitors. As with any major city, standard precautions apply — stick to well-lit, busy streets at night and be aware of your surroundings.
