Jonathan Bailey Is Playing Dracula — and the Cast Around Him Is Ridiculous

Jonathan Bailey is about to whisper in your ear — as Dracula.

Audible has announced that Bailey will voice the Count in a major new audio adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula, dropping October 1, 2026. But the headline isn't just Bailey doing his most menacing work yet. It's the ensemble they've built around him, which reads less like a cast list and more like someone raided every prestige project currently running.

As Attitude UK reported, Bailey stars alongside Ella Purnell as Mina, Aimee Lou Wood as Lucy, Louis Partridge as Jonathan, David Jonsson as Dr. Seward, Lesley Manville as Mrs. Westenra, and Maggie Gyllenhaal — absolutely iconic — as Professor Van Helsing. That's Wicked, Fallout, White Noise, Alien: Romulus, and The Crown in one production. Someone at Audible had a good winter.

This adaptation smartly reframes the story around Mina's perspective — her fiancé vanishes in Transylvania, she starts piecing together what's happening through letters and diary entries, and the horror that emerges is less about gothic spectacle and more about a predator targeting her mind directly. It's a psychological thriller wearing the bones of the horror classic, and for audio, that's exactly the right move. When you can't see the monster, hearing him becomes the whole game.

Aurelie de Troyer, head of Audible content, International, laid out the vision in the announcement press release: "This is what Audible does best: crafting immersive audio experiences that transport listeners into the heart of the story." She went on to explain the project's specific appeal: "When Dracula whispers in your ear, when you hear his footsteps in the dark but see no reflection, that's when you understand why we're the home for this story. Our production elevates the psychological thriller at Dracula's core."

The adaptation is directed by Mary Lambert — whose horror credentials stretch back to Pet Sematary — making this her audiobook debut, with a score from composer Ilan Eshkeri. The English-language version arrives October 1, 2026, alongside French (Omar Sy and Deva Cassel), Italian (Riccardo Scamarcio and Benedetta Porcaroli), and Castilian Spanish and Latin American Spanish editions. The German version — with Matthias Schweighöfer and Jeanne Goursaud — follows in February 2027, and a Brazilian Portuguese edition comes later that year.

The casting of Bailey is the obvious gay-culture moment here, but it also just makes sense: he carries an intensity that can turn intimate in a heartbeat, which is precisely what Dracula demands. The Count isn't at his scariest when he's monstrous — he's scariest when he's charming. Bailey has already proven, convincingly, that he can do both.

October 1 can't come fast enough.
