Speakeasy-style gay cocktail bar in Park Circle, North Charleston
Bar Polari is a speakeasy-style gay cocktail bar in North Charleston's Park Circle, the neighborhood that's become the metro area's most visibly queer-friendly corner. Owner Brent Compagni opened it in 2024 as a deliberate alternative to loud, drag-driven gay nightlife: a small, dimly lit room of roughly 50 seats, black booths, and LGBTQ+ artwork built around cocktails and conversation. The name nods to Polari, the coded slang gay men used in 20th-century Britain, and the house menu of about a dozen drinks is named in that dialect. Food is intentionally minimal — a grilled cheese, plus beer, wine, and a few zero-proof options — and you're welcome to bring in something from the Reynolds Avenue restaurants nearby. The room still makes space for drag brunches, bingo, and Drag Race watch parties, but the everyday draw is a quieter, grown-up place to drink well. For travelers, it's reason enough to make the trip up to North Charleston from downtown.
