New York City, New York
Chelsea flagship of America's original gay sports bar chain, with rooftop and weekly drag nights
The original Boxers, open since 2010 on West 20th Street in Chelsea and the flagship of the gay sports bar group founded by Bob Fluet and Rob Hynds. The template the chain later carried to Hell's Kitchen and Philadelphia started here: flatscreens on every wall, pool tables, brick-oven pizza, and bartenders in red boxer shorts. The rooftop is the warm-weather draw, and RuPaul's Drag Race viewing parties pack the place to Super Bowl levels. It bills itself as America's gay sports bar and leans deliberately welcoming whether or not you can name a single player — straight friends and game-day novices included. The bar also puts out an annual bartender calendar. Doors open mid-afternoon on weekdays and early on weekends. As Chelsea's sports-bar anchor it draws a mixed, high-energy crowd, and pairs naturally with a wider night out among the neighborhood's bars.
