Nashville, Tennessee
East Nashville gay bar in a converted Five Points grocery.
Canvas is a gay bar in East Nashville's Five Points corridor, opened in 2011 on Church Street and relocated to Fatherland Street in late 2022. The space occupies a converted former grocery store, outfitted with stained-glass pieces carried over from the original location and a deliberate no-TV policy designed to keep people talking. The weekly lineup rotates through drag shows, karaoke, and DJ sets, with a full bar and a food menu covering house-made pasta, burgers, and wings. There's an outdoor patio for warmer nights. Canvas sits near Lipstick Lounge on the stretch of East Nashville the late founder Darek Tanner liked to call the neighborhood's "gayborhood." Tanner, who built Canvas into one of the city's most beloved queer rooms, died in December 2024; co-owner Jon Byrne keeps it running in the same spirit — a neighborhood-first bar that runs more like Cheers than a club.
