New York City, New York
Chelsea's legendary leather bar and rooftop since 1970.
The Eagle is Chelsea's enduring leather and gear bar, carrying a name that goes back to a 1970 original near the West Side waterfront. The current incarnation opened in 2001 on West 28th Street, inside a converted 19th-century horse stable, and it's now one of the last leather bars standing in a neighborhood that once had several. Two dark, no-frills floors hold the bars, a pool table, and the kind of industrial, gear-forward decor the scene runs on; in warmer months a rooftop opens with a third bar. The programming leans into dress-code and gear nights, contests, and theme parties, drawing a crowd that knows exactly why it's there. It's a destination bar rather than a drop-in, worth the trip to far west Chelsea for anyone who wants the real leather tradition rather than a watered-down version of it.
