Part of the Gay Des Moines Guide — bars, events & things to do.
Des Moines, Iowa
Queer-run Highland Park coffee shop and community gathering space.
Gay Friendly coffee shop in the Highland Park neighborhood on Des Moines' north side, run by Drew and Kara, who have lived in the neighborhood since 2013. The shop has had a partially queer and non-binary staff since the very beginning — an intentional choice they acknowledge openly on their site. The Prism Tabletop Club, an LGBTQ+ gaming group run by The Rook Room (a queer-owned Des Moines business), meets here on the first Wednesday of every month. Beyond that, it's a straightforward specialty coffee shop: Windmill Coffee Roasters beans, local bakery pastries, board games and books on the shelves, wheelchair accessible. Open daily.
