- Edition: IML 48 (founded 1979)
- Attendance: ~20,000 from around the world

What Is International Mr. Leather?
Founded in 1979 by Chuck Renslow and Dom Orejudos, IML started as a leather title contest at Chicago's Gold Coast bar and evolved into the world's premier celebration of leather, kink, and fetish culture. The weekend centers on the International Mr. Leather contest — where titleholders from leather clubs across the globe compete — but the event has grown far beyond the stage.
Today IML draws nearly 20,000 people to Chicago for four days of parties, the legendary Leather Market with hundreds of vendors, educational workshops, community fundraisers, and some of the most memorable nightlife you'll find anywhere. Proceeds benefit the Leather Archives & Museum in Chicago, and the event remains a cornerstone of LGBTQ+ culture and history.
The 2026 edition also sees the return of the International Mr. Bootblack (IMBB) contest to IML Weekend.
Pro Tip
IML is much more than a contest — it's a community homecoming. Even if you're not into the competition, the energy across the city during IML weekend is unlike anything else. The bars, the Market, and the people-watching alone are worth the trip.
The IML Leather Market
When: Friday–Sunday at Congress Plaza Hotel
The Leather Market is one of the highlights of IML Weekend and a must-visit even if you're not buying. Hundreds of vendors from across the U.S. and beyond set up shop inside the Congress Plaza Hotel, selling handcrafted leather goods, harnesses, boots, fetish wear, rubber gear, accessories, art, and more. It's a sprawling, sensory-overload marketplace where you can watch artisans at work, try on custom pieces, and discover gear you didn't know existed.
The Market is open approximately 20 hours across three days — typically 11 AM to 7 PM Saturday, with adjusted hours Friday and Sunday. Entry is free with IML event access.
Pro Tip
Go early on Friday or Saturday morning for the best selection and room to browse. By Saturday afternoon, the aisles are packed. Budget at least 2 hours — you'll want to make multiple passes.
The IML Contest
When: Saturday (preliminaries) and Sunday (finals) at Congress Plaza Hotel
The heart of IML Weekend is the contest itself. On Saturday, contestants go through the "Pecs and Personality" preliminary round — part introduction, part stage presence, and a chance for the audience to size up the field. Sunday brings the main event: the IML and IMBB contest finals, where titleholders representing leather clubs from across the globe compete for the International Mr. Leather and International Mr. Bootblack titles.
The contest is equal parts pageantry, community celebration, and genuine emotion. Contestants are judged on presentation, community involvement, and their speech about what leather means to them. Even if you've never attended a leather title contest, the energy in the room is electric — and watching a community rally around its leaders is genuinely moving.

Saturday BRUT runs alongside ZENTRØ, a new Memorial Day weekend production from two of Chicago's top LGBTQ+ event producers. Friday + Saturday combo tickets are the best value.

Where the Leather Community Goes Out
IML Weekend transforms Chicago's LGBTQ+ bars into leather havens. Here are the key venues to know.
Jackhammer is ground zero for IML bar events — the Andersonville leather bar runs back-to-back programming Thursday through Monday across the main floor and The Hole downstairs. If you only hit one bar neighborhood during IML, make it Andersonville and start here.
The SoFo Tap in Andersonville is the 2Bears Tavern Group's bear-focused neighborhood bar. Expect a packed patio and a friendly crowd that bridges the leather and bear communities — the most welcoming room of the weekend for first-timers.
Cell Block is Chicago's leather and fetish bar on Halsted Street in Boystown. Its location makes it the easy anchor for any Halsted bar crawl, and the back room programming runs consistently late through the weekend.
The Hole hosts some of the weekend's most intense after-dark programming. If Jackhammer is the community living room, The Hole is the basement.
2Bears Tavern Uptown rounds out the 2Bears Tavern Group lineup with trivia, games, and a welcoming vibe for bears, cubs, and friends.
Pro Tip
Jackhammer, The SoFo Tap, and Meeting House Tavern are all in Andersonville — a quick rideshare from Boystown. Plan to split your nights between both neighborhoods.
Don't overlook the Boystown bars either. Sidetrack hosts show tunes all weekend, Charlie's keeps the dance floor going, Scarlet Bar brings DJs, and Splash has themed nights. The whole neighborhood is buzzing during IML.
Where to Stay
Congress Plaza Hotel
The official IML host hotel at 520 S Michigan Ave is where the Leather Market, contest, and many official events take place. It books up months in advance — if you can get a room, you're at the center of the action.
Boystown & Lakeview
Staying in Boystown puts you walking distance from Halsted Street bars like Cell Block, Sidetrack, Charlie's, and Scarlet. Hotels in Lakeview are generally more affordable than downtown.
Andersonville
For the Jackhammer, SoFo Tap, and Meeting House crowd, Andersonville is ideal. It's a quieter neighborhood with great restaurants and a strong LGBTQ+ community feel.
Downtown / Loop
If the Congress Plaza is sold out, other Loop hotels keep you close to the main IML venue and an easy rideshare from the bar neighborhoods.
Search LGBTQ+-friendly hotels in Chicago on Expedia
Pro Tip
Book accommodations early — IML Weekend coincides with Memorial Day, so hotel prices across Chicago spike. The Congress Plaza Hotel and nearby Loop hotels sell out months ahead.
Getting There & Getting Around
Flying in: Chicago O'Hare (ORD) and Midway (MDW) both connect to downtown via the CTA Blue and Orange Lines, respectively. A train ride is $2.50 and takes 45–60 minutes.
Congress Plaza Hotel: Take the CTA Red Line to Harrison or Roosevelt, or the Green/Orange Line to Roosevelt. It's also a short walk from Michigan Avenue and Grant Park.
Boystown: CTA Red Line to Belmont or Addison. Most bars are on or near Halsted Street between Belmont and Grace.
Andersonville: CTA Red Line to Berwyn, then a short walk west. Or rideshare — it's about 10 minutes from Boystown.
Between neighborhoods: Uber and Lyft are your friends. Expect 10–15 minutes between Boystown and Andersonville, 15–20 minutes from downtown.
Pro Tip
If you're splitting time between the Congress Plaza Hotel events and the bar scene, staying downtown and using rideshares to Boystown and Andersonville is the most flexible option.
First-Timer Tips
- Dress code is a spectrum. Full leather harness, a simple leather vest over a t-shirt, or just jeans and boots — all are welcome. The point is self-expression, not gatekeeping
- Bring cash. Some Leather Market vendors and bar cover charges are cash-only
- Pace yourself. IML runs Thursday through Monday. If you go hard Friday and Saturday, you'll miss the Black and Blue Ball
- Consent is everything. The leather community takes consent seriously. Ask before touching, respect boundaries, and communicate clearly
- Explore beyond the hotel. The Congress Plaza events are the core, but the real magic happens across the city — especially in the bars of Boystown and Andersonville
- Hydrate. Late May in Chicago averages highs around 75°F, and you'll be moving between indoor and outdoor venues. Water is your friend

Robbie S.
I'm Robbie, the founder of Out x Out. I'm from Minneapolis, though I'm spending 2026 building this community from the road — somewhere between South America and Asia. The idea for Out x Out came from a trip to Berlin, where the gay nightlife calendar was years ahead of ours: you could see not just where to go out, but which night to go — so naturally I wanted that kind of insider info for every city in the US (and beyond... eventually). I'm more of a behind-the-scenes type, but the whole point of this is connection: I'd take one real one over a hundred surface-level ones, and I'm trying to build that for the community, city by city.
