Friday's opener sets the tone. The 2026 Service Station Opening Party takes over the space at 3352 N. Halsted (the former DS Tequila) and leans into the weekend's playful, gear-forward energy. Chicago Eagle hosts the BUNKER victory party and is the city's marquee leather-and-gear bar. Touché is one of the oldest leather bars in the country, a Rogers Park institution with a back bar built for the scene. Cell Block in Boystown is a cornerstone leather cruise bar with a strict gear-friendly back room, and Jackhammer on the far North Side runs some of the city's most reliable fetish nights year-round. It's no accident that a weekend like this lives in Chicago. The city is, by most accounts, the birthplace of American leather culture. In 1958, Chuck Renslow opened the Gold Coast — widely cited as the first leather bar in the United States — on Chicago's North Side. Renslow and his partner, the artist Dom Orejudos (who drew under the name “Etienne”), spent the following decades building the institutions, imagery, and events that defined the scene nationally.
Renslow went on to found International Mr. Leather in 1979, and IML has been held in Chicago every Memorial Day weekend since — today it draws thousands of competitors and attendees from around the world, making Chicago the annual capital of the leather title circuit. In 1991, Renslow and Tony DeBlase founded the Leather Archives & Museum, now in Rogers Park, the world's museum and research library devoted to leather, kink, and fetish history. DeBlase also designed the Leather Pride flag, which he first unveiled in Chicago in 1989.
The city's clubs carried that history forward. The Chicago Hellfire Club, founded around 1971, created “Inferno,” one of the earliest and most influential leather “runs” in the country. Bars like Touché and Cell Block kept the neighborhood scene alive for decades. Chicago Fetish Weekend and its Midwest Rubber & Leather Contest are the newest layer on that foundation — a grassroots, mid-summer counterpart to IML that keeps the regional community organizing, competing, and showing up for each other.
Chicago Fetish Weekend launched in 2023 to give the Midwest's rubber and leather communities a dedicated summer weekend and a joint regional title contest of their own.
