AIDS Garden Chicago
3003 N Lakefront Trail, Chicago, IL 60657The Chicagoland Candlelight Vigil opens Chicago's Pride season on a reflective note Friday, June 5, 2026, at 7:30 p.m. at AIDS Garden Chicago on the lakefront. Held in front of the Keith Haring "Self-Portrait" sculpture near Belmont Harbor, this annual gathering remembers those lost to HIV/AIDS and honors the activists and caregivers whose work shaped the LGBTQ+ community we celebrate all month long. Part of a national week of action, the vigil brings together community members, health advocates, and Chicago's LGBTQ+ organizations for an evening of remembrance, speakers, and solidarity as the sun sets over Lake Michigan. It's a free, all-ages, public event — a quiet but vital counterpoint to the festivals and parties ahead, grounding Pride 2026 in the history and ongoing fight for LGBTQ+ health and dignity. Bringing a candle, a memory, or simply your presence is more than enough. AIDS Garden Chicago is a meaningful destination in its own right, the first permanent public space in the city dedicated to honoring the AIDS epidemic, set along the lakefront trail near the Belmont area of Lincoln Park. Reach it via the CTA Red/Brown/Purple Line to Belmont and a walk east to the lake, or the 77 Belmont bus. Dress for the lakefront evening air and arrive a few minutes early to settle in. For many in the community, beginning Pride Month here — in remembrance before celebration — is exactly how it should be.
