Neighborhoods·Boston Gay Guide

What is the Gay Neighborhood in Boston?

Boston's primary gay neighborhood is the South End, one of the city's most vibrant and diverse areas. Centered along Tremont Street and Washington Street between Back Bay and Roxbury, the South End has been home to a thriving LGBTQ+ community for decades, with rainbow crosswalks, queer-owned boutiques, restaurants, and some of Boston's most iconic gay bars.

The South End

The South End is where you'll find the highest concentration of LGBTQ+-owned businesses in Boston. Key spots include Club Café (one of Boston's longest-running gay venues), Trophy Room (a popular gay gastro pub), and Cathedral Station. The neighborhood's Victorian brownstones, tree-lined streets, and walkable restaurant scene make it one of the most desirable areas in the city.

Jamaica Plain

Jamaica Plain (JP) is Boston's second major LGBTQ+ hub, located a few miles south along Centre Street. JP has historically been especially popular with queer women and LGBTQ+ families. It's home to Midway Café which hosts Queeraoke every Thursday — one of the city's longest-running queer nights.

Bay Village & Fenway

Bay Village, a small historic neighborhood between Back Bay and the Theater District, is sometimes called Boston's original gayborhood and is home to Jacques' Cabaret, Boston's legendary drag venue. The Fenway area is home to Fenway Health, a nationally recognized LGBTQ+ health center, and has a growing queer community presence.
