Is Minneapolis Gay Friendly?

The Twin Cities are one of the most welcoming metro areas for LGBTQ+ people in the country, backed by some of the strongest and longest-standing legal protections of any state.

Legal Protections

Minnesota has been a leader in LGBTQ+ rights for over three decades:

  • Anti-discrimination (1993): The Minnesota Human Rights Act has prohibited discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in employment, housing, public accommodations, education, and credit since 1993 — one of the earliest statewide protections in the country
  • Marriage equality (2013): Minnesota legalized same-sex marriage on August 1, 2013, becoming the 12th state to do so and the first Midwestern state to legalize it through a legislative vote rather than a court order. In 2012, Minnesota voters rejected a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage — the first time voters in any state defeated such a ballot measure
  • Gender-affirming care (2023): Minnesota passed the Gender-Affirming Care Protection Act, making the state a legal refuge — providers cannot be prosecuted for offering care to out-of-state patients
  • Conversion therapy ban (2023): Banned conversion therapy on minors
  • Hate crime protections: Sexual orientation and gender identity are protected categories under Minnesota's hate crime statutes with enhanced penalties

Community & Culture

The Twin Cities have a substantial and deeply rooted LGBTQ+ community. Key institutions include:

  • OutFront Minnesota — The state's primary LGBTQ+ civil rights advocacy organization, active since 1987
  • Rainbow Health (formerly Minnesota AIDS Project) — Founded 1983, provides LGBTQ+-affirming healthcare
  • Quatrefoil Library — An LGBTQ+ lending library in Minneapolis, one of the oldest in the country (founded 1986)
  • Lavender Magazine — Minnesota's LGBTQ+ publication since 1995, serving 150,000+ readers
  • Twin Cities Pride — One of the largest free Pride events in the nation, drawing 500,000+ attendees

Political Climate

Minnesota has a progressive state government that passed sweeping LGBTQ+ protections in 2023 including the gender-affirming care act, conversion therapy ban, and protections for drag performances. Minneapolis and St. Paul have had openly LGBTQ+ elected officials for decades. The University of Minnesota was home to one of the first gay student groups in the country, founded in 1969.
