Chicago, Illinois
A Chicago theatre company staging LGBTQ+ stories since 1995.
About Face Theatre is one of the country's leading LGBTQ+ theater companies, founded in Chicago in 1995 to put queer stories and artists at the center of the American stage. The name nods to a turning of the tide — shifting the direction of the conversation by, of, and about queer lives. This Irving Park Road address is the company's administrative office; productions are staged in partnership with venues around the city rather than at a single home theater. Over three decades About Face has built a national reputation for new work and adaptation, earning a long run of Jeff and After Dark awards and helping develop Doug Wright's "I Am My Own Wife" before it went on to win the Pulitzer Prize and the Tony. Its About Face Youth Theatre program, launched in 1998, brings queer and trans young people into theater-making, activism, and leadership. Check the company's current season for what's on and where.
