Bloomington, Indiana
Lesbian-founded bagel shop with scratch-made NY-style bagels since 1996
Bloomington's original scratch bagel bakery, boiling and baking New York-style bagels on Dunn Street since 1996. The recipes follow the old kosher methods of NYC's Bagel Baker's Local #338, boiled rather than steamed, and the cream cheese spreads are made in house. Three decades on, the Dunn Street original just north of Kirkwood is still the Saturday-morning ritual for a good chunk of town, with two more locations around Bloomington since. It's a college-town institution as much as a bakery: an unfussy, all-ages counter that has long made a point of welcoming everyone, including Bloomington's LGBTQ community. Grab a dozen for the road, or post up at the Dunn Street original with a coffee and a loaded everything bagel.
