Bloomington, Indiana
Gay-owned café on College Ave with scratch-baked pastries and brunch
A gay-owned bakery and cafe that's become one of downtown Bloomington's true community hubs, on the Square at College Ave. Owners Tracy Gates and Oualelaye "Wally" Ouedraogo run it as a full breakfast-and-lunch spot with scratch baked goods, brunch plates, and coffee they roast themselves at their own roastery. The crowd is exactly the Bloomington mix: students, artists, activists, and regulars who came for a chai and stayed through lunch. The chai lattes have a following, the morning pastry case is worth arriving early for, and the banana cream pie is the move when it's in. A second location at Atwater and Woodlawn, near the IU campus, means there's usually an Inkwell within walking distance wherever you are in town. For a traveler it's the easy daytime anchor of queer Bloomington, the kind of welcoming, unpretentious room that tells you what the town's inclusive streak actually feels like.
