Part of the Gay State College Guide — bars, events & things to do.

State College, Pennsylvania
Gay bar and cocktail lounge anchoring downtown State College since 1984
Chumley's has anchored a prominent downtown corner of State College since 1984, when Liz Pierce and Joe Schrantz opened it as a soup-and-sandwich spot that quietly became the area's gathering place for queer students and locals at a time when there was nowhere else. More than forty years on, it's still here, rainbow flag over the door, one of the longest-running gay bars in central Pennsylvania. What set it apart from the start was its visibility: a spot on West College Avenue next to The Corner Room, not tucked down a back alley, even if early patrons sometimes circled the block before ducking in. Today it's an easy, welcoming cocktail bar and Happy Valley institution that pulls a mixed crowd of students, alumni, and regulars. For a college town its size, having a gay bar this established and this out in the open is genuinely rare, and Chumley's wears the history well.
