Fox Market and Bar is Vermont's only LGBTQ+ bar, a combined specialty grocery and beer-and-wine bar that co-owners Liv Dunton and Doni Cain opened on Route 2 in East Montpelier in 2021, the state's first new queer bar in roughly 15 years. By day it's a genuine market stocked with local products and snacks; by night it's a community living room, anchored by the Fox Den, a back room of couches, board games, books, and art supplies that feels more like a friend's house than a club. It's cultivated first and foremost for queer Vermonters, with the owners framing it as 'this is yours' rather than simply 'you're welcome.' Programming includes drag karaoke, queer dance parties, and globe-trotting weekly themed dinners alongside a tight list of local beer and natural wine. For anyone passing through central Vermont, it's a singular, warmly rural take on what a gay bar can be.
