Part of the Gay Washington D.C. Guide — bars, events & things to do.

Washington D.C., Washington D.C.
A Dupont Circle video bar known for show tunes and happy hour.
JR's has been a Dupont Circle institution since 1986, on the 17th Street strip that hosts the city's High Heel Race each Halloween. It's a gay bar and grill with a big front window, a long happy hour, and a crowd that skews neighborhood-regular. The signature night is Showtunes: on Mondays the whole bar sings along to musical-theater clips on the screens, a long-running tradition, with a Saturday-afternoon replay. Add classic drag shows and trivia and you've got one of D.C.'s most dependable low-key gay bars. For a traveler staying near Dupont it's the easy default: central, friendly, and busy without being a production.
