Part of the Gay Milwaukee Guide — bars, events & things to do.
Milwaukee, Wisconsin
A two-level Walker's Point dance club, anchoring the scene since 1984.
LaCage has anchored Walker's Point since March 1984, when George Prentice and Cory Grubb opened it as La Cage Aux Folles — Milwaukee's first gay bar bold enough to put big, unshielded windows on a busy street corner at a time when the others stayed boarded up and hidden. That visibility made it a landmark, and through the 1980s and '90s it doubled as a gathering place for a community living through the AIDS crisis. Set in the 1887 Bahr Building, the two-level club holds 772, with four bars anchoring the corners of the open main dance floor and the upstairs Jackie Roberts Commemorative Show Lounge. Since 2022 it's been owned by longtime patron David Wolz, and the calendar runs to drag revues and late-night dance nights like Cocky!, Tucked & Loaded, and Non-Pop!. Four decades in, it's one of the longest-running gay bars in the country.
