Part of the Gay Houston Guide — bars, events & things to do.

Houston, Texas
Houston's lesbian bar, a Washington Ave staple since 2013.
Pearl Bar is Houston's only lesbian bar, on Washington Avenue between the Heights and Montrose, and it's run with intent: Julie Mabry opened it in 2013 to create a space built specifically for queer women in a city that didn't have one. More than a decade on, it's become the center of Houston's lesbian nightlife and a community hub well beyond it. The feel is laid-back rather than high-gloss — a big patio, themed nights, karaoke, drag, and a steady calendar of fundraisers for LGBTQ+ causes. It draws a mixed, welcoming crowd while keeping queer women at the center, which is exactly why it matters: in 2020 it was one of ten LGBTQ+ bars nationwide to receive a preservation grant from the Human Rights Campaign and Showtime. Worth crossing town for if you want somewhere that feels like a neighborhood bar with a real sense of community behind it.
