Part of the Gay Washington D.C. Guide — bars, events & things to do.
Washington D.C., Washington D.C.
D.C.'s gay-owned brewery and taproom in NoMa, open since 2019.
Red Bear is D.C.'s only 100% gay-owned brewery, opened in 2019 by three Seattle transplants in NoMa. The 7,000-square-foot taproom has an unusual Pacific Northwest aesthetic — an indoor mountain range built along the central bar, string patio lights, and board games scattered throughout. The 10-barrel brewhouse turns out everything from hazy IPAs and milk stouts to fruited sours and saisons across 24 taps. Programming leans community: District Trivia on Mondays, drag bingo twice a month, and RuPaul's Drag Race watch parties on Fridays. The founders designed Red Bear to be a neighborhood brewery that happens to be gay-owned rather than a traditional gay bar — an ASL-interpreter bartender reflects that inclusive-by-design approach.
