Part of the Gay Chicago Guide — bars, events & things to do.
Chicago, Illinois
A lively Northalsted mainstay with drag, dancing, and a big patio.
Roscoe's Tavern has anchored the corner of Halsted and Roscoe in Northalsted since 1987, and it's one of the bars that helped define the neighborhood as Chicago's gay main street. Inside it sprawls across several moods: a front pool-table room, a fireside lounge for actual conversation, an outdoor patio, and a back dance floor that fills up on weekends. The programming is a rotating mix of drag shows, music videos, karaoke, dueling pianos, and RuPaul's Drag Race viewing parties, the last of which Roscoe's has become especially known for. The crowd is broad and high-energy, equally a first stop for travelers working the strip and a regular for locals. If you only have one night in Northalsted and want the quintessential Boystown bar, Roscoe's is the safe pick, big enough to find your corner whether you came to dance, sing, or just watch the room.
