A 12,000-square-foot gay nightclub in Omaha's Old Market, The Max has anchored the city's queer nightlife since 1984, and traces its lineage to the Hollywood Discotheque, the late-1970s disco whose demolition pushed the party two blocks south and made it permanent. Spread across three levels, it runs a main dance floor with LED walls and moving lights, a second performance room called the Arena, a glass-enclosed upper lounge with billiards, and a large outdoor patio. The Max draws national notice well out of proportion to Omaha's size: the New York Times has called it a Saturday-night destination, Mashed named it one of America's best LGBTQ+ bars in 2023, and Lady Gaga turned up to perform after her 2011 concert in town. Home-grown traditions hold it together, from the Miss Max pageant to the Mister Max drag king contest. For a traveler crossing the Plains, it's the regional big room worth planning a night around.
