Woman-owned Cooper-Young tattoo studio, LGBTQ+ affirming since 1993.
Angela Russell and David Evans opened Underground Art on Young Avenue in 1993, billing it as the first custom tattoo studio in Memphis. It is woman-owned and describes itself as a “left leaning, book loving, inclusive safe space,” which in practice means free condoms, Narcan, fentanyl test strips and tampons kept out for anyone who needs them. It has been a Cooper-Young fixture long enough that Memphis magazine has profiled it as a neighborhood institution.
