Subscribe NowNorthalsted gets all the headlines, but Chicago's LGBTQ+ nightlife stretches far beyond the Boystown strip. From Andersonville's bear bars and lesbian cocktail lounges to a hidden dive bar steps from the Magnificent Mile, some of the city's best queer spaces are in neighborhoods you might not expect.
Whether you're looking for something the Halsted corridor doesn't offer — a lesbian-owned lounge, a multi-level leather complex, a board-game tavern — or you just want to explore a different side of queer Chicago, these 10 bars are worth the trip.
Pro Tip
Most of these bars are on or near the CTA Red Line. Andersonville is a quick bus ride west from the Berwyn stop, Uptown is at the Wilson stop, and Rogers Park is at the Loyola or Morse stops. Second Story Bar downtown is near Grand or Chicago stations.
1. Meeting House Tavern
5025 N Clark St, Andersonville · Game bar & tavern
Meeting House Tavern is Andersonville's LGBTQ+ living room — a two-story gathering place packed with free Skee-Ball, shuffleboard, darts, pool, and a wall of board games. The drink menu goes beyond the usual with a solid selection of non-alcoholic, THC, and CBD beverages alongside craft cocktails and beer. It's the kind of place where you show up for one drink and stay for three hours because someone challenged you to shuffleboard.
- Don't miss: Thursday karaoke is a neighborhood institution. The "Big Gay Gayme Show" and Drinking & Dragons (D&D) nights draw a loyal crowd of regulars.
- Good to know: Daily drink specials keep it affordable. The upstairs space hosts events and gives you room to breathe on busy nights.
2. The SoFo Tap
4923 N Clark St, Andersonville · Bear bar
The SoFo Tap is Chicago's friendliest bear bar — dog-friendly, laid-back, and anchored by a great outdoor beer garden that comes alive in summer. Sister bar to 2Bears Tavern Uptown (same ownership group), it draws the bear and cub community but welcomes everyone. The vibe is neighborhood-local, not scene-heavy, and the bartenders remember your name.
- Don't miss: Bear Beer Blast (weekly), Bearaoke karaoke nights, and Nerd Bear Trivia give the calendar real personality. IML weekend events spill over from Boystown.
- Good to know: The beer garden is one of the best kept secrets in Andersonville. Doggy Days means you can bring your pup.
3. Dorothy
2500 W Chicago Ave, West Town · Lesbian cocktail lounge
Dorothy is one of the most important additions to Chicago's queer nightlife in years — a Black-owned, sapphic-centered cocktail lounge tucked downstairs in a speakeasy-style basement space in West Town. Named after the "friend of Dorothy" phrase, it serves beautifully crafted cocktails named after LGBTQ+ trailblazers in an intimate, 1970s-inspired setting. It's one of only a handful of lesbian bars left in the entire country.
- Don't miss: Fruit Salad (monthly queer open mic), Lust for Life (bi-monthly rock & roll burlesque), and Dorothy's Silent Book Club. The bar has expanded into immersive queer theater productions — check their calendar.
- Good to know: Open Sunday, Monday, Thursday 6 PM–11 PM and Friday–Saturday 6 PM–1 AM. Closed Tuesday and Wednesday. Small space, so arrive early on weekends.
Pro Tip
Dorothy and Nobody's Darling are two of fewer than 30 lesbian bars remaining in the entire United States. Visiting both in one Chicago trip is a queer nightlife pilgrimage worth making.
4. Big Chicks
5024 N Sheridan Rd, Uptown · Neighborhood bar & restaurant
Big Chicks is one of Chicago's most cherished LGBTQ+ institutions — open since 1986 and inducted into the Chicago LGBT Hall of Fame. Owner Michelle Fire has cultivated a space that's equal parts neighborhood bar, art gallery (there's a genuine fine art collection on the walls), and community hub. The legendary Sunday buffet/brunch is a tradition that draws people from across the city. Connected to sister restaurant Tweet next door.
- Don't miss: The Sunday buffet is the main event — arrive hungry. The art collection throughout the bar is genuinely worth looking at, not just decoration.
- Good to know: Opens at 4 PM weekdays, 9 AM Saturday. The crowd is one of the most genuinely mixed (age, gender, orientation) of any queer bar in Chicago.
5. Jackhammer
6406 N Clark St, Rogers Park · Dance club & leather complex
Jackhammer is an experience, not just a bar. This multi-level complex in Rogers Park reopened in 2023 after a three-year renovation and now offers different vibes on every floor — from dance club energy to leather bar atmosphere. Connected to Leather 6410 (an adult shop) and The Ashland Arms (a gay B&B on the third floor), it's a self-contained queer destination. Right next door to Touché, Chicago's long-running leather bar, making this corner of Clark Street a leather and fetish hub.
- Don't miss: The different floors give you room to find your vibe without leaving the building. Themed nights rotate — check the website for the current calendar.
- Good to know: Closed Monday and Tuesday. Late-night hours (until 4–5 AM) Thursday through Sunday. The Rogers Park location is a hike from Boystown, but the CTA Red Line Loyola stop is nearby.

6. Nobody's Darling
1744 W Balmoral Ave, Andersonville · Lesbian cocktail lounge
Nobody's Darling is a Black woman-owned queer cocktail bar that earned a James Beard Award nomination for Outstanding Bar Program — and it's easy to see why. The rotating cocktail menu features drinks named after trailblazers, the space is intimate and stylish, and the vibe strikes a perfect balance between special-occasion-worthy and neighborhood-welcoming. It's one of the most acclaimed queer bars in the country, period.
- Don't miss: The seasonal cocktail menu rotates regularly — each drink tells a story. The space has recently expanded, so it's slightly less impossible to get a seat than it used to be.
- Good to know: Reservations aren't taken, so showing up early is the move, especially on weekends. The Balmoral Avenue location is a short walk from Andersonville's Clark Street strip.
7. 2Bears Tavern Uptown
1140 W Wilson Ave, Uptown · Late-night neighborhood bar
2Bears is the bar you wish existed in every neighborhood — dog-friendly, genuinely welcoming, open until 4–5 AM, and stocked with free pinball, darts, and a Nintendo Switch. Named "one of the most welcoming gay bars" by GayCities, it's the sister bar to The SoFo Tap and shares the same unpretentious, everyone-belongs energy. Classic cocktails, house shots, and a wide beer selection keep the drinks simple and good.
- Don't miss: Squabble nights on Mondays, poker on Tuesdays, and Switch parties on the first and third Fridays. The late-night hours (until 4 AM weeknights, 5 AM Saturday) make it a perfect last stop.
- Good to know: Right by the Wilson CTA Red Line stop, making it an easy detour from Boystown. The dog-friendly policy means you might make a new four-legged friend.
Pro Tip
Andersonville and Uptown bars are generally cheaper than Boystown. Expect lower drink prices, fewer covers, and a more neighborhood-local crowd at Meeting House, SoFo Tap, Big Chicks, and 2Bears.
8. Atmosphere
5355 N Clark St, Andersonville · Go-go bar
Atmosphere is Andersonville's answer to the Lucky Horseshoe — a neon-lit go-go bar with male dancers on Friday and Saturday nights (10 PM–1 AM). The drinks are strong, the DJs keep the energy up, and the vibe is fun without being pretentious. It fills a specific niche that no other Andersonville bar covers and draws a crowd that appreciates exactly what it is.
- Don't miss: Friday and Saturday go-go nights are the main draw. RuPaul's Drag Race viewing parties and DJ flashback dance parties round out the weekly calendar.
- Good to know: Open Tuesday through Sunday, closed Monday. Saturday opens at 3 PM if you want to start early. Cash tips for dancers — bring small bills.
9. Granville Anvil
1137 W Granville Ave, Edgewater · Dive bar
The Granville Anvil is the no-frills dive bar that every neighborhood deserves — affordable drinks, a welcoming crowd, and zero pretension. Sitting in Edgewater between Boystown, Andersonville, and Rogers Park, it's the geographic connector between Chicago's three main queer neighborhoods. It's been a quiet LGBTQ+ staple for years, and the regulars like it that way.
- Don't miss: The appeal here is the simplicity — a cheap drink, good conversation, and a bar that doesn't try to be anything it's not.
- Good to know: Opens at 11 AM on weekdays, making it one of the few queer-friendly options for daytime drinking. The Granville CTA Red Line stop is a short walk away.
10. Second Story Bar
157 E Ohio St, 2nd Floor, Streeterville · Dive bar
Second Story Bar is downtown Chicago's best-kept queer secret — a tiny dive bar hidden on the second floor of a Streeterville building, steps from the Magnificent Mile. Look for the Sayat-Nova sign and head upstairs. With a capacity of just 36, it's intimate by necessity and has been operating since 1984. This is the only LGBTQ+ bar in downtown Chicago, which makes it both a rarity and a lifeline for visitors staying near the Loop who don't want to trek to Boystown.
- Don't miss: The novelty of finding a queer dive bar above a downtown restaurant is half the fun. The bartenders are friendly and the vibe is old-school neighborhood despite the Michigan Avenue zip code.
- Good to know: Opens at noon on weekdays. Accepts cards now (it was cash-only for decades). The Grand or Chicago CTA Red Line stops are closest.
Pro Tip
Andersonville has its own Pride celebration separate from the Boystown Pride Parade. Midsommarfest (June 12–14, 2026) on Clark Street is the neighborhood's biggest annual street festival — all the Andersonville bars on this list go all out.

Are there LGBTQ+ bars on Chicago's South Side?
Yes. While this list focuses on the North Side and downtown, Chicago's South Side has important LGBTQ+ spaces including Jeffery Pub in South Shore — one of the longest-running Black-owned gay bars in the country, operating since the 1960s — and Club Escape in Greater Grand Crossing, known for its long-running drag shows. La Cueva Nightclub in Little Village has been a Latinx LGBTQ+ institution for over 40 years. These spaces serve communities that are often underrepresented in mainstream "best gay bars" lists, and they deserve a visit.
How do I get to Andersonville from Boystown?
Andersonville is about 1.5 miles north of Boystown. The easiest route is the #22 Clark bus, which runs north on Clark Street from Belmont through Andersonville. A rideshare takes about 10 minutes. You can also walk it in 25–30 minutes along Clark Street — it's a pleasant walk through Uptown. The CTA Red Line Berwyn stop is a few blocks east of Andersonville's Clark Street strip.
Is it worth going beyond Boystown for nightlife?
Absolutely. Boystown has the concentration, but the bars beyond Northalsted offer things the strip doesn't — lesbian-centered spaces (Dorothy, Nobody's Darling), bear community hubs (SoFo Tap, 2Bears), a leather complex (Jackhammer), and neighborhood joints where you're more likely to meet locals than tourists. If you only visit Halsted Street, you're seeing one slice of queer Chicago. The full picture includes Andersonville, Uptown, Rogers Park, and beyond.
Can you do a bar crawl across these neighborhoods?
Not as easily as Northalsted — these bars are spread across the city. But a focused Andersonville crawl (Meeting House → SoFo Tap → Atmosphere → Nobody's Darling) is very walkable along Clark Street. You can add Big Chicks and 2Bears in Uptown with a short bus or rideshare. For Jackhammer in Rogers Park, plan it as a separate trip. Dorothy in West Town and Second Story downtown are standalone destinations.
