Part of the Gay Chicago Guide — bars, events & things to do.
Chicago, Illinois
A cash-only Edgewater dive with cheap drinks and a country jukebox.
The Granville Anvil is an Edgewater dive bar near the Granville Red Line stop, and one of the North Side's most unpretentious gay watering holes. It looks the part — dim light, a worn 1950s-basement feel, a jukebox and TVs that don't take themselves too seriously — and it runs cash-only with cheap, strong pours. The crowd is regulars who've been coming for years rather than the Northalsted circuit, and there's a back patio that opens up in summer. If you want a quiet, stiff drink among people who aren't there to be seen, this is the bar — the antidote to the busier strips to the south.
