City Guide·Dallas Gay Guide

Is Dallas Gay Friendly?

Dallas is widely considered one of the most gay-friendly cities in Texas and across the American South, with a large and visible LGBTQ+ community that dates back decades.

Local Protections

The City of Dallas has enacted local ordinances that prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in:

  • Employment
  • Housing
  • Public accommodations

The city also provides domestic partner health insurance benefits for city employees.

State Context

Texas does not have a statewide anti-discrimination law covering sexual orientation or gender identity. However, federal protections apply through the 2020 Supreme Court ruling (Bostock v. Clayton County) which prohibits employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. Same-sex marriage has been legal statewide since 2015.

Community Strength

Dallas has the 6th largest LGBTQ+ population in the United States with over 211,000 LGBTQ+ residents in the metro area. The Oak Lawn neighborhood along Cedar Springs Road is one of the oldest and most established gayborhoods in the country, with the Resource Center serving as a major community hub offering health services, programs, and advocacy.

Cultural Presence

Dallas is home to Uptown Players, one of the leading LGBTQ+-focused theater companies in the region, and institutions like the Black Tie Dinner, one of the largest LGBTQ+ fundraising events in the nation. The city's creative and arts scenes in Deep Ellum, Oak Cliff, and the Design District are also strongly queer-influenced.
