City Guide·Orlando Gay Guide

Is Orlando Gay Friendly?

Orlando is one of the most gay-friendly cities in the Southeast, with strong local protections and a thriving LGBTQ+ community — though the broader Florida political landscape presents some challenges.

Local Protections

  • HRC Municipal Equality Index: 100/100 — one of only a handful of Florida cities to earn a perfect score
  • Non-discrimination ordinance: Covers sexual orientation and gender identity in employment, housing, and public accommodations
  • Orange County also has its own LGBTQ+ non-discrimination protections
  • Transgender protections added to the city ordinance in 2002

Political Climate

  • Orlando is a progressive city within a more conservative state
  • Patty Sheehan served as Orlando's first openly gay city commissioner for over 20 years (elected 2000)
  • The city has a large and politically active LGBTQ+ community estimated at 100,000-150,000 residents in the metro area

State-Level Considerations

  • Florida does not have a statewide non-discrimination law covering sexual orientation or gender identity
  • Recent state legislation has restricted classroom discussion of sexual orientation and gender-affirming care for minors
  • Same-sex marriage has been legal since 2015 under federal law

Community & Resources

  • LGBT+ Center Orlando (946 N Mills Ave) — Community center providing services, events, and resources
  • Equality Florida — Statewide advocacy organization with a major presence in Orlando
  • One Orlando Alliance — Coalition formed after the Pulse tragedy to support the LGBTQ+ community
