City Guide·Palm Springs Gay Guide

Is Palm Springs Gay Friendly?

Palm Springs is widely considered one of the most gay-friendly cities in the world, with an LGBTQ+ community that isn't just welcomed — it's the fabric of the city itself.

By the Numbers

An estimated 30-50% of Palm Springs residents identify as LGBTQ+, one of the highest per-capita concentrations in the United States. The city's gay community has been a driving force in local politics, business, and culture for decades.

Political Representation

In 2017, Palm Springs elected an entirely LGBTQ+ city council — believed to be a first for any US city. The city has had openly gay mayors since the 1990s, including Ron Oden, Steve Pougnet, Robert Moon, Geoff Kors, and Lisa Middleton, who became the first openly transgender mayor of a California city.

Legal Protections

  • California scored 100 on the HRC State Equality Index (highest tier: "Working Toward Innovative Equality")
  • The state's Fair Employment and Housing Act prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in employment, housing, and public accommodations
  • California banned conversion therapy for minors in 2012
  • Palm Springs has its own municipal non-discrimination ordinance and a Human Rights Commission
  • Marriage equality has been in effect since 2013

Community Infrastructure

Palm Springs is home to the LGBTQ Community Center of the Desert, dozens of LGBTQ+-owned businesses, gay resorts, and a year-round calendar of major LGBTQ+ events. The city's identity is inseparable from its queer community.

Regional Context

While Riverside County overall leans conservative, Palm Springs itself is strongly progressive. The city is an oasis of acceptance within the broader Coachella Valley.
