12th Street Beach is South Beach's gay beach: the sand east of Ocean Drive between 11th and 12th streets, next to Lummus Park and the Beachwalk. The Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau calls it one of the city's two semi-official gay beaches — the other is Haulover, which has the clothing-optional section. 12th Street is textile. The landmark is the lifeguard tower painted in rainbow and Progress Pride stripes, designed by architect William Lane, and the beach is the backdrop for Winter Party Festival and Miami Beach Pride. Facilities are the easy part: public restrooms, outdoor showers, and chair and umbrella rentals on the sand, with Ocean Drive's cafés a few steps west. There is no dedicated beach lot, so plan on the city garages inland. The beach is busy year-round; winter and spring, around the big circuit and Pride weekends, is peak.
