Gay bar on Allen Street in Buffalo's Allentown arts neighborhood
26 occupies 26 Allen Street in Buffalo's Allentown, the address that was the gay bar Cathode Ray for some 35 years before it closed in 2022. Former Cathode Ray staff reopened it in 2023 as 26, keeping the neighborhood-bar bones while widening the welcome: gender-neutral restrooms, a staff trained on inclusivity, and a stated zero-tolerance policy on discrimination of any kind. Where the old room read mostly as a gay men's bar, the owners have been explicit about making room for trans patrons and queer women alongside the longtime Allentown crowd. The calendar is built for regulars, with Geeks Who Drink trivia, karaoke on Wednesdays and Sundays, Buffalo Bills watch parties, and weekend DJ sets, plus a side patio for warmer nights. It's open daily from early afternoon to 3 a.m., which makes it both an easy after-work stop and a late-night anchor for Allentown, the heart of Buffalo's queer nightlife.
