Women and nonbinary community haven in Chicago's Portage Park
Anne's Haven is a women- and nonbinary-focused nonprofit in Portage Park, founded in 2016 by Janet Giangrasse as a tribute to her late mother. The 1,400-square-foot storefront is designed after her mother's favorite Wisconsin log cabin: electric fireplace, a kitchen with coffee and snacks, and an outdoor patio with hammocks and a fire pit. It reads more like someone's living room than a community center, which is the point. Programming is roughly 90% member-driven: workforce development workshops, art classes, crochet circles, open mic nights, yoga, and LGBTQ+ bible study sessions. Drop-in is $5, most events run $3-$25 with RSVP. LGBTQ+ Issues is listed as an explicit focus area of the organization.
