Chicago, Illinois
The Midwest's largest LGBTQ+ community center, on Halsted in Boystown.
The Midwest's largest LGBTQ+ community center, housed in a 175,000-square-foot LEED-certified building in the heart of Chicago's Boystown neighborhood on Halsted Street. The center traces its roots to 1973, when it started as Gay Horizons; the current facility, designed by Gensler, opened in 2007 with a preserved 1924 terra cotta facade wrapped in modern glass. Inside, the building holds the 170-seat Hoover-Leppen Theatre, rotating art galleries featuring LGBTQ+ artists, a full gymnasium with recreational leagues, and a rooftop terrace with skyline views. Programming spans behavioral health services, free HIV testing, youth and senior programs, culinary job training, and cultural events — serving nearly 20,000 people annually. A Whole Foods occupies the ground floor.
