Gerber/Hart is the Midwest's largest LGBTQ+ library and archive, founded in 1981 and named for Chicago gay-rights pioneer Henry Gerber and lesbian activist-attorney Pearl M. Hart. It holds more than 14,000 circulating volumes, hundreds of periodical titles, and over 100 archival collections documenting queer life across Chicago and the Midwest — personal papers, organizational records, photographs, and rare ephemera that exist nowhere else. Since 2014 it has occupied the second floor at 6500 N. Clark in Rogers Park, above Howard Brown Health. It's a working research library and community space rather than a polished museum: you can browse the stacks, dig into the archives by appointment, or catch one of its exhibitions and public programs. For anyone tracing LGBTQ+ history in the region — or just wanting a quiet, affirming place to read — it's a genuine resource.
