Mexico City, State of Mexico
Centro gay club built around irreverent Catholic-kitsch camp.
A gay nightclub on República de Cuba in Mexico City’s Centro Histórico, built around subverted Catholic kitsch. Servers dressed as priests and nuns work the floor, a confession booth at the entrance trades your sins for a complimentary shot, and the walls are lined with neon-framed saints and a provocatively posed San Sebastián. The maximalist decor leans all the way into it — Christmas lights, projection mapping, and religious iconography everywhere you look. Opened in 2010 by Juan Carlos Bautista and Víctor Jaramillo as an overflow space for their earlier venue El Marrakech Salón, La Purísima (locally called La Puri or La Tía Puri) became a fixture of Centro’s queer nightlife on its own. DJ Elías Álvarez mixes cumbias, reggaeton, and pop. Open Thursday through Saturday; Thursdays are free entry, weekends run a 70-peso cover.
