Paris, Paris
Feminist bookshop-café for queer and LGBTQ+ lit in Oberkampf.
Violette and Co is a feminist and LGBTQIA+ bookshop-café on Rue Jean-Pierre-Timbaud in the 11th, named for the lesbian writer Violette Leduc and for violet, the color long tied to feminism. The shelves run deep on queer literature, feminist theory, lesbian and trans writing, essays, graphic novels, and children's books, with a café corner that makes it easy to settle in over a coffee with a stack you didn't plan to buy. Founded in 2004, the shop closed in 2022 and reopened in 2023 under a new team backed by a crowdfunding campaign, which added the café and broadened the collection. It works as much as a community hub as a store: regular author talks and meet-ups make it a genuine gathering place for Paris's queer and feminist readers rather than just a place to browse. For a traveler, it's the kind of stop that tells you more about the city's queer intellectual life than any nightlife listing will.
