Paris, Paris
LGBTQ+ bookshop since 1980, now in the 11th Arrondissement
Les Mots à la Bouche opened in 1980 on rue Simart in the 18th arrondissement and moved to 6 Rue Sainte-Croix-de-la-Bretonnerie in Le Marais in 1983 — arriving before the neighborhood became Paris's established gay district and helping shape its identity. It spent nearly four decades there before rising rents and Airbnb-driven gentrification forced the store out in 2020, and it relocated to 37 Rue Saint-Ambroise in the 11th arrondissement with help from Paris City Hall. The stock covers LGBTQ+ fiction, poetry, essays, graphic novels, and art books in French and English, plus DVDs and international magazines. The store hosts regular author events and book launches. Open daily including Sundays, 10:30 AM to 7:30 PM. France's first and oldest LGBTQ+ bookshop.
