Part of the Gay Los Angeles Guide — bars, events & things to do.
Los Angeles, California
Long Beach neighborhood dive with pool and a patio since 1977.
Mineshaft is a gay leather-and-jeans dive on Broadway in Long Beach's Eastside, the dense stretch of LGBTQ+ bars that runs east from Alamitos. It's been here since 1977 — opened by longtime Long Beach bar owner Jimmy Casto — and is now run by Jeff and Rhonda Darling, who also own The Brit next door. Inside is unpretentious and cheap: a full bar, two pool tables, a smoking area out back, and a regular crowd that keeps it attitude-free. It's a neighborhood anchor more than a destination club — the kind of place where the pool table and the bartender matter more than a dance floor. Sunday beer busts and a long daily happy hour are the draws, and the easygoing room makes it a natural first or last stop on a Broadway bar crawl. Come for cheap drinks and conversation, not a production.
