Out of the Closet is a thrift store with a mission: it's one of roughly two dozen shops run by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, the largest global HIV/AIDS nonprofit, and 96 cents of every dollar spent here funds AHF's prevention and treatment programs. The chain started in Los Angeles in 1990, and the South St. Pete store opened in 2017 on 26th Avenue South. Inside you'll find men's and women's clothing, furniture, home decor, kitchenware, books, electronics, and the kind of vintage and oddball finds that make thrifting worth the trip. What sets it apart from an ordinary secondhand shop is the on-site clinic: free walk-in rapid HIV testing in a private area, with confidential results the same visit, plus an AHF pharmacy. Donations are accepted by drive-up drop-off or scheduled pickup. It's a practical, friendly place to shop, give, or get tested, with everything feeding back into HIV care.
