Connecticut's longest-running gay bar on Crown Street since 1974.
Partners is Connecticut's longest-running gay bar, open on Crown Street since 1974, opened by Jack Garity and run for years now by Dave and Bernard Kleman. The ground floor is a proper neighborhood bar with a loyal regular crowd and Sunday karaoke; upstairs converts into a dance club on Friday and Saturday nights, with mirrors, spinning lights, and a DJ. The deliberately plain exterior, frosted glass and weathered paint, is a holdover from the era when gay bars kept a low profile, and it has stayed that way on purpose. It's one of only two queer bars left from New Haven's 1970s-through-'90s scene, the other being 168 York Street Cafe a few blocks away, which makes the two of them the living memory of the city's gay nightlife. Queer-owned and open seven nights a week, with drag shows, go-go nights, and club nights filling out the calendar.
