Zipolite's gay, clothing-optional cove, reached over the rocks
Playa del Amor is the small cove at the far east end of Zipolite beach, and it's the gay heart of town. To get there, walk to the end of the main beach and climb roughly a hundred uneven stone steps up and over the rocks. Under the rules the local community set in 2022, nudity is allowed here, and the cove is the most nude and the most gay stretch of Zipolite. By day the crowd is mixed; around sunset it turns mostly male and the cove is at its busiest. A couple of stands sell beer and food and rent chairs and umbrellas. Two things to know. The rip currents along this coast are strong, so swim with real care. And in 2022 the town banned sex on the beach, with a 5,000-peso fine plus community service, and set beach hours that end at 9pm. The cove is busiest in high season, December to April.
