Part of the Gay Houston Guide — bars, events & things to do.

Houston, Texas
Houston's legendary gay dance club, back in Midtown.
Rich's is one of the most storied names in gay Houston nightlife, a dance club that first opened in 1983 and earned the nickname "Studio 54 of the South" across its decades on San Jacinto Street in Midtown. Owner Jeff Harmon moved the club to Montrose in 2019, then brought the brand back to its original San Jacinto address in 2025 after a roughly $1 million overhaul of the lights and sound and a full redesign of the space. It's worth knowing what the reborn Rich's is before you plan a night around it: rather than a standing weekend nightclub, it now runs as a large, renovated multipurpose venue that still welcomes the LGBTQ+ community and regularly hosts concerts, DJ nights, and Pride-season events, alongside weddings and private bookings. Travelers chasing the old club should check what's actually on the calendar for the night they're in town rather than assume a typical bar service.
