Part of the Gay London Guide — bars, events & things to do.

London, London
Historic community pub on Old Compton Street, Soho
The Admiral Duncan is one of Soho's oldest gay pubs, trading on Old Compton Street since at least the 1830s and a fixture of the village's social life for generations. It's a small, traditional London pub at heart, with wood, a busy bar, drag shows and a close, talk-to-strangers crowd, rather than a club, which is much of its charm. It's also a place of real significance. In April 1999 a neo-Nazi detonated a nail bomb here, killing three people and injuring dozens in an attack aimed at the LGBTQ+ community. The pub reopened and has stood ever since as a symbol of the community's resilience, with a memorial chandelier and a plaque inside the bar commemorating those killed and injured. That history gives a drink here a weight you won't find elsewhere on the street. Come for the warmth and the drag, and know you're also standing somewhere that matters.
