Ottawa, Ontario
Ottawa's oldest gay bar with a Parliament-view licensed balcony in ByWard Market
Ottawa's oldest gay bar, up on the second floor at 41 York Street in the heart of the ByWard Market. The Lookout has been the city's central queer nightspot for more than two decades, and its signature feature is practical as much as scenic: the only licensed balcony in Ottawa, where you can take your drink outside over the Market with Parliament Hill in view. Inside, the week splits between drag shows on Friday and Saturday nights and a steady run of karaoke and themed evenings the rest of the week, including a long-standing Sunday tradition. FACES Magazine readers have voted it Ottawa's number-one nightclub year after year, which says less about the decor than about the crowd it keeps. For a traveler, it's the obvious first stop in a downtown without a large gay scene, the place where most queer nights in Ottawa start.
