May is the warm-up month — except when it isn't. On a single weekend (May 22–25, 2026), three of the biggest gay events in the country happen at the same time in three different cities. DC Black Pride in Washington. Sizzle Miami on South Beach. International Mr. Leather in Chicago. Pick one. You can't physically do all three, and trying to split a single Memorial Day weekend between them is how people end up exhausted and missing the best parts of each.

This is the guide to choosing right. We've broken down every gay event worth knowing about in May 2026 across North America — the Memorial Day three-way, plus the season-opener prides earlier in the month, plus the smaller regional events worth a road trip. Whether you're chasing a circuit weekend, a Pride parade, or just one really good party, here's what's happening.

May 2026 At a Glance

Five big events. Three of them on the same weekend. Read on for how to choose, what to expect, and where to stay.

Long Beach Pride: The Season Opener

May 15–17, 2026 | Long Beach, CA

If you want to ease into Pride season, Long Beach is the right call. It's the second-largest Pride in California, draws around 80,000 people, and runs the weekend before the Memorial Day chaos — so you get a major Pride experience without competing for hotel rooms with three other cities.

The weekend centers on Marina Green Park, where the festival sets up two days of stages, vendors, and food. The parade rolls down Ocean Boulevard on Sunday afternoon and is genuinely one of the most fun in SoCal — smaller and more personal than the LA Pride spectacle a month later, with a beach-town energy that bigger urban prides can't match. Long Beach also has its own gay strip on East Broadway (locally called "the Gay Corridor") with bars like The Falcon, Mineshaft, and Silver Fox that go off all weekend.

Long Beach skews more diverse and laid-back than West Hollywood — fewer circuit gays, more couples, more families, more lesbians, more "hey, you free for brunch tomorrow?" energy. If your idea of a good Pride is a beachfront festival, an afternoon parade, and a chill night out, this is your weekend.

Pro Tip

Stay downtown near the waterfront — the Renaissance Long Beach Hotel puts you steps from the festival grounds, and the parade route is a short walk. Hotel Current is the budget pick.

Vallarta Pride: The International Warm-Up

May 17–24, 2026 | Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Puerto Vallarta has quietly become one of the top three or four gay destinations on the planet, and Pride week is when the Zona Romantica (the gay village) goes from "always on" to "completely on." A full week of pool parties at Mantamar Beach Club, the Thursday parade down the Malecon, circuit nights at Industry, and beach gatherings up and down Playa de los Muertos.

What makes Vallarta Pride different from a US Pride is the geography. The Zona Romantica is a tiny, walkable neighborhood — five or six blocks of gay-owned hotels, restaurants, and bars stacked between the ocean and the foothills. You're never more than a ten-minute walk from anything, which means you can do a pool party at noon, a parade at 5pm, dinner overlooking the bay at 8, and a circuit night at midnight without ever getting into a car. Try doing that in Miami.

May is also when Pacific-coast Mexico is between rainy seasons — hot but not humid, sunny most days, ocean warm enough to actually swim in. And the dollar still goes far. A long weekend in Vallarta during Pride can run cheaper than a single night at the Marseilles in South Beach.

Pro Tip

Stay in the Zona Romantica or skip the trip — staying anywhere else in Vallarta means cab rides every time you want to go out, and the neighborhood is the entire point. Hotel Amaca and Casa Cupula are gay-owned. Airbnbs in the Romantica book up by March.

Memorial Day Weekend: Pick Your Vibe

This is the hard part. May 22–25, 2026 is Memorial Day weekend in the US, which means three of the biggest gay events of the year — not just May, the whole year — are running at exactly the same time, in three different cities, with three completely different scenes.

You can fly to any of them. You can't fly to all three. So here's a real comparison.

DC Black Pride — Washington, DC

May 21–25, 2026 | Washington, DC

The original Black Pride. Founded in 1991, now in its 35th year, and still the flagship event for what's now a global Black Pride movement spanning 30+ cities. Memorial Day weekend in DC turns into a city-wide gathering of tens of thousands of Black LGBTQ+ people for cultural programming, signature events, day parties, brunches, and nightlife. The 2026 theme is "New Black Renaissance."

This is the right weekend if: you want an event with deep cultural and political roots; you want to see the best Black queer artists, organizers, and performers in one place; you want parties and pool days but also panels and community events; you want DC's actual gay scene (Dupont Circle, U Street) layered into the experience; you're looking for the most welcoming weekend on the calendar for Black queer travelers.

The headline events are the Saturday day party (legendary) and the Sunday gospel brunch, but the weekend is much more than the parties — it's a full cultural festival run by the Center for Black Equity.

Pro Tip

Book Dupont Circle hotels by March — Memorial Day in DC sells out fast across the city, and you want to be walking distance from the gay neighborhood. The Kimpton Hotel Palomar and The LINE DC are both excellent.

Sizzle Miami — Miami Beach, FL

May 21–25, 2026 | Miami Beach, FL

The biggest urban gay party weekend in the country. Sizzle takes over South Beach for Memorial Day with pool parties at the Marseilles Hotel, yacht parties on Biscayne Bay, a massive beach bash, and the closing party at Club Space that goes until the sun is well above the ocean. Now in its 20+ year run, Sizzle is where you go to see and be seen.

This is the right weekend if: you want pure circuit energy; you want a beach scene during the day and a club scene at night with no break in between; you don't mind paying peak Memorial Day Miami pricing for the experience; you want yacht parties; you can hang at Space until 9am; you've been doing circuit weekends for a while or you want to try one for the first time without leaving the country. Sizzle is more accessible than Atlantis Cruise but more intense than a regular Pride.

Pro Tip

Memorial Day in South Beach is one of the most expensive weekends in the country to book a hotel. The Marseilles (official host) sells out by February, and prices on the Shelborne and Faena triple their off-season rates. Book by mid-February or commit to staying further north on Collins.

IML Chicago — Chicago, IL

May 21–25, 2026 | Chicago, IL

International Mr. Leather. The world's premier leather and fetish weekend, in its 47th year, taking over the Congress Plaza Hotel in the Loop with thousands of leather, kink, rubber, and pup community members from every country on earth. The competition itself crowns the next IML, but the real event is the weekend around it: the Leather Market (the largest fetish vendor expo on the planet), the Black & Blue Ball, side parties at Boystown bars, and a city-wide takeover that turns Michigan Avenue into a leather runway.

This is the right weekend if: you're in the leather/kink/rubber/pup scene already, or you've been curious; you want the most welcoming, well-organized fetish event in the world; you appreciate ritual and community; you want a Memorial Day weekend that doesn't revolve around pool parties. Even if you don't wear leather, a lot of people go just for the energy and end up at the Black & Blue Ball.

Pro Tip

The Congress Plaza host hotel sells out within hours of the IML block opening — typically the previous fall. If you're going for the first time and missed the host hotel, the Hilton Chicago next door is fine. The Boystown hotels (Hotel Zachary, The Willows) are a quick rideshare and put you closer to the after-hours bar scene.

How to Choose Between the Three

If you're stuck between DC, Miami, and Chicago for Memorial Day, here's the honest breakdown.

  • Pick DC Black Pride if you want cultural depth, Black LGBTQ+ community, and a Pride that's about more than parties. The most welcoming weekend on the calendar for Black queer travelers, and one of the most welcoming for everyone else too.
  • Pick Sizzle Miami if you want pure circuit, beach scenes, yacht parties, and the most aesthetically photogenic weekend of the year. Bring a swimsuit you'd want photographed and don't plan to sleep before Tuesday.
  • Pick IML Chicago if you're in the leather/kink scene, or you're curious. It's the most organized, internationally-attended fetish event in the world, with a side-benefit of being in one of the best gay cities in America.

A useful tiebreaker: if it's your first Memorial Day weekend and you want the broadest, most beginner-friendly option, DC Black Pride is the most accessible — the events are spread across the week, you can dip in and out, and you don't need to be in any particular community to feel at home. Sizzle is intense; IML has its own ecosystem. DC just is what you bring to it.

Worth noting: Provincetown's Memorial Day weekend is also a thing — not an organized "event," but the unofficial start of P-Town's gay summer, when the bears, the lesbians, and the boats all show up at once. If you'd rather a quieter weekend on Cape Cod with a few thousand of your closest friends, that's a valid fourth option.

Other May 2026 Events Worth Knowing

The big five aren't the only things happening in May. A few smaller events worth a road trip or a side trip if you're already in the area:

  • New Hope PrideFest (May 9–17, New Hope, PA) — A week-long Pride in Bucks County's historic LGBTQ+ artist colony, an hour from Philly. Small-town, charming, and one of the oldest continuous Prides in Pennsylvania.
  • Springfield Pride (May 16, Springfield, IL) — Illinois's capital city does Pride a month before Chicago's. A solid stop if you're road-tripping through the Midwest.
  • Cancun Pride (May, TBA, Cancun, Mexico) — The Caribbean's biggest gay celebration, running on the beach and in the gay clubs of the hotel zone. Dates typically firm up in March.

There's also the unofficial calendar of things that aren't formal events but are worth knowing about:

  • May 17 — IDAHOBIT (International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia). Most major Pride organizations and gay bars host fundraisers or speakers. A meaningful date even if you're not traveling.
  • Memorial Day weekend at Fire Island and Provincetown — The unofficial season opening for both. No central organization, but the bars, restaurants, and beach scenes all come back to life. Cherry Grove and the Pines start their weekly tea dances. Provincetown's first weekend back is one of the best of the entire summer.

Why May Is Worth Traveling For

May is the best month of the year to take a Pride trip, even though it's not the official Pride Month. Three reasons.

The weather works. The northern cities are warm but not humid yet (Chicago, DC, NYC). Florida is still bearable before summer's brutal stretch. Mexico's Pacific coast is at its best. The shoulder month between spring and full summer hits everywhere worth going.

It's cheaper than June. Memorial Day weekend pricing in Miami or Chicago is real, but the rest of May is meaningfully cheaper than June pricing in the same cities. A May trip to Long Beach, Provincetown, or Vallarta runs 30–50% less than the same trip a month later.

You're not competing with Pride Month. Every gay person in America is trying to plan a June trip. Hotels in Chicago for the last weekend of June (Chicago Pride) are 3x normal rates and book six months out. May trips are easier to coordinate, easier to book, and let you actually relax instead of fighting for a parade-route view at 6am.

If you can swing a May trip and a June trip, do both. If you can only swing one, do May.

How to Plan a May Pride Trip

Some practical advice that applies whether you're going to one of the big five or any of the smaller events:

  • Book hotels by March. Memorial Day weekend pricing is real in DC, Miami, and Chicago. Even Long Beach and Vallarta hit shoulder-season demand. Booking 2–3 months out can save you 40–60%.
  • Pick a flight in/out window that matches the actual events. DC Black Pride peaks Friday night through Sunday night, but the kickoff happens Wednesday. Sizzle pool parties run through Memorial Day Monday. IML's main contest is Sunday night. Don't fly out at 6am Sunday morning and miss half the weekend.
  • Pack for the climate, not the calendar. May in DC can be 90°F or 65°F. Miami is humid by lunch. Vallarta is hot all day. Chicago's lakefront wind cuts through anything that isn't real layering. Check the actual forecast 5 days out.
  • If it's your first time at any of these events, go alone or with one friend. Big groups make it harder to follow your own energy. The events are designed for solo travelers — you'll meet people, that's the whole point.
  • Pre-load tickets for the marquee events. Sizzle pool parties, IML contest tickets, and DC Black Pride signature events all sell out in advance and cost more at the door, if doors are even still open.

FAQ

What's the biggest gay event in May 2026?

If you're measuring by attendance and international reach, International Mr. Leather in Chicago is the largest single event, drawing 25,000+ people from every continent over Memorial Day weekend. By total cultural impact, DC Black Pride is arguably the most significant — it's the original Black Pride and the flagship event for a global movement. Sizzle Miami is the biggest urban-gay party weekend specifically. All three run May 21–25, 2026.

Is Memorial Day weekend the best gay travel weekend of the year?

It's the most concentrated. Three world-class events happening at once is a unique calendar moment — if you want a circuit weekend (Sizzle), a culturally-rich Pride (DC Black Pride), or a fetish weekend (IML), there's no other moment in the year where all three are options. The downside is pricing: Memorial Day in any of those three cities is peak. June gets you actual Pride Month with even more events (and even more competition for hotels).

How early should I book hotels for May 2026 gay events?

For Memorial Day weekend (DC, Miami, Chicago) — book by mid-February for the official host hotels, or by late March for general availability. For Long Beach Pride and Vallarta Pride — book by early April. For the smaller May events (Springfield, New Hope), you can book a month out and still get good rates.

Is Vallarta Pride safe for LGBTQ+ travelers?

Yes — Puerto Vallarta is one of the most LGBTQ+-welcoming cities in Latin America. The Zona Romantica is a fully out, fully gay neighborhood with same-sex couples holding hands on the street, openly gay-owned hotels and restaurants, and a long-established expat community. Same-sex marriage has been legal across all of Mexico since 2022. Standard travel safety applies (don't flash valuables, use registered taxis), but homophobic harassment is rare in the Romantica and the broader Vallarta tourist zones.

Can I do DC Black Pride and Sizzle Miami in the same weekend?

Technically possible, practically not worth it. They run the same days (May 21–25) in cities that are a 2.5-hour flight apart. By the time you fly out of DC Saturday morning, check into a Miami hotel, and get to a pool party, you've missed the main DC Saturday day party — and you're flying back Sunday morning, missing the Sizzle closing run. Pick one. You'll have a better weekend.

Are there any May Pride events in Canada?

Toronto and Vancouver Prides are both in late June — the closest major Canadian Pride events to May. Smaller spring Prides happen in cities like Halifax (typically July), but May is mostly quiet on the Canadian Pride calendar. If you want a May LGBTQ+ trip with international flavor, Vallarta or Cancun are the better picks.

What's the dress code for IML Chicago if I don't own leather?

Dress how you want. Most weekend events at the host hotel and surrounding bars don't have a leather dress code — only the official competition events and a few specific parties (the Pup Mosh, certain dungeon nights) require gear. Plenty of attendees wear regular clothes to the Leather Market and the bar nights. If you want to dress up but don't own leather, a harness, boots, and shorts will fit in everywhere. The community is welcoming to first-timers.
