Neighborhoods·Phoenix Gay Guide

What is the Gay Neighborhood in Phoenix?

Phoenix's primary LGBTQ+ neighborhood is the Melrose District, centered along 7th Avenue between Indian School Road and Camelback Road. Known locally as "The Curve" for its winding path through the city's otherwise straight grid, this one-mile stretch is home to the densest concentration of gay bars, nightlife, and LGBTQ+-owned businesses in Arizona.

What to Find in the Melrose District

The Melrose District is packed with gay bars, restaurants, coffee shops, vintage stores, and art galleries. Major nightlife spots include Charlie's Phoenix (a legendary gay country bar with line dancing), Stacy's at Melrose (weekly drag shows and eclectic entertainment), Boycott Bar (one of the few lesbian-owned bars in the country), and The Rock (a neighborhood favorite with karaoke and drag). The district also features a rainbow crosswalk at 7th Avenue and Montecito, installed in partnership with Phoenix Pride.

Beyond the Melrose District

While the Melrose District is the heart of gay Phoenix, LGBTQ+-friendly venues extend into nearby areas. Kobalt is located in the Park Central area and draws a diverse crowd with drag shows and a spacious dance floor. Downtown Phoenix offers additional nightlife options and is an easy rideshare from the Melrose District. Community organizations like One n Ten and Lambda Phoenix Center provide resources and gathering spaces for the LGBTQ+ community.
