Queer Women·San Diego Gay Guide

Are There Lesbian Bars and Safe Spaces in San Diego?

San Diego is one of a handful of U.S. cities that still has a dedicated lesbian bar, making it a standout destination for queer women.

Gossip Grill

Gossip Grill (1220 University Ave, Hillcrest) is one of only about three dozen lesbian bars remaining in the country. Opened in 2009, it fills a void left when previous queer women's bars like Six Degrees and The Flame closed in the early 2000s. By day it's a welcoming restaurant with a full food menu, and by night it transforms into San Diego's go-to sapphic dance spot with DJs, drag shows, and a lively back patio. The bar centers queer and transgender women while remaining inclusive of everyone.

  • Nunu's Tavern — Classic mid-century cocktail lounge in Hillcrest with a mixed, welcoming neighborhood crowd
  • insideOUT — Restaurant and lounge on University Avenue with a mixed LGBTQ+ crowd

Events & Nights

Several Hillcrest venues host queer women's nights and sapphic-focused events throughout the year. During San Diego Pride (July), women's events and meetups are featured throughout Pride week. Check Out x Out's events page for the latest queer women's events in the city.
