insideOUT is one of Hillcrest's more ambitious LGBTQ-owned restaurants, an indoor-outdoor space whose name captures the layout: a handsome main dining room opens onto a multi-level atrium of walkways, planted nooks, and a central water feature, so you're dining outside in the middle of the building. Executive chef Johnny Duran's California-Mediterranean menu changes with the seasons, and the bar program leans into craft cocktails built for the setting. It's the spot in the neighborhood for a date or a dressed-up dinner rather than a dive-bar night, and it's known for going all-out on seasonal pop-up transformations, redoing the decor for Pride, the holidays, and beyond. Reservations are smart, especially on weekends and during brunch. A polished, design-forward option a few blocks east of the main Hillcrest bar strip.
